Boot-scootin' cookies

All last Thursday, the question kept running through my mind: What am I going to take to the bake sale?? The question was quickly followed my a silent scream: AAAAHHHHHH!!!

I already told you we went to the Butch Taft (my dad) Memorial Youth Rodeo on Saturday. They had a bake sale to help raise money for year-end awards. But what to take? I wanted something at least somewhat  cute...as in I didn't want people to feel sorry for my kids because of their momma's poor cooking skills. But it also had to be able to stand up to the heat of the day. And it had to be easy because I was too traumatized emotionally leading up to the rodeo to deal with anything too complex. I seriously thought about these Oreo Cheesecake Pretzel Bites...but decided the heat might be too much for them no matter how yummy they looked. Maybe another day on those.

I finally decided on some cupcakes that I piped color-swirled icing on and topped with mini-sugar cookies and matching sprinkles...which I forgot to capture in pictures. But they were cute and among the first things to go at the bake sale.

And as long as I had the sugar cookie dough ('cause I was lazy & bought the pre-made dough) I thought I might as well do some big decorated cookies for kid #2, right?
And the kids helped, which may have detracted slightly from the overall cuteness of each cookie, but the added fun more than made up for it.
We used canned chocolate icing for the boot base and used up the rest of our swirled icing for the decorations.
And we used Heath bits for the dirt on the bottom of the boots, plus M&Ms, Reese Pieces, Reese peanut butter chips and Nestle chocolate chips for the decorations. Not bad by Houin standards...and they tasted even better!
